Toyota Aygo is going to benefit from company’s latest engine technologies. It will be equipped with the new 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine thus delivering both its impressive economy and its distinctive driving character. In fact, the engine features enhanced thermal and combustion management, and is set to be introduced in the new Aygo this summer.
The powertrain achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of 37 per cent. This is a quality that, in combination with other fuel reduction measures, can offer an improvement of almost 30 per cent in fuel consumption compared to current vehicles. The version of the engine runs at a higher, 11.5:1 compression ratio than before. It also has adopted a new cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and features adjusted engine valve timing.
More efficient combustion is achieved with help from a new-shape intake port and piston profile that create a strong tumble flow, with the air-fuel mixture moving in vertical swirl inside the cylinder. The engine was redesigned and made lighter. This is the reason why it was eas for the designers and engineers to feature easily exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.
Significant reductions have also been made in the amount of energy lost through friction in the engine. All of these measures contribute to an estimated combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 68.8 mpg, with CO2 emissions of 95g/km.
Toyota plans to introduce 14 new engine variations based on this unit by 2015.
