Alfa Romeo recently ran an internet poll asking fans from around the world to vote for a possible new name for its upcoming entry-level model. The final name that was picked was the controversial ‘Furiosa’ but Alfa officials were quick to point out that the new name wouldn’t be used in some markets. Other reports claim Alfa will stick with its previous ‘Junior’ title for other markets. Since then nothing much has been seen or heard about the baby Alfa until this prototype was spotted on the streets of Turin.
Expected to be unveiled at October’s Paris Motor Show, the new Furiosa will be targeted at premium minicars like BMW’s Mini and Audi’s upcoming A1, and it could potentially become Alfa’s top selling model. Production is scheduled for late 2008, with the first models to hit showrooms towards the end of the year and priced from €16,000 and up.
These new spy shots gives us a clear look at the final shape of the car and its proportions. As predicted the head and taillights get a new circular look and the trademark grille remains. The base model is expected to get Fiat Group’s new 1.4L turbo engine developing around 150hp, while a high-performance model will adopt a 1.8L JTB direct injection turbo four-cylinder producing 220hp.
