All-new Sportage and Niro dominate compact SUV sales

Kia UK has had a landmark September, ending the month with a 6.6 per cent market share, bolstered by sales of the all-new Sportage, all-new Niro and its electrified range.

September saw the UK car market grow by 4.6 per cent, largely thanks to fleet sales. Kia was the fourth best-selling brand in September with 14,966 sales, and remains at no.3 year-to-date, with 83,105 sales, up 12.2 per cent and on track to achieve 100,000 sales by year end.

Combined sales of the all-new Sportage and all-new Niro, dominate the popular and important Compact SUV segment. The all-new Sportage has sold 24,301 units and the all-new Niro 20,096 units year-to-date. These two models now make up more than half of Kia’s total sales.

In the month that saw electric car sales across the UK reach one million units in total, the all-electric Niro continues to prove popular with customers. It is the third best-selling EV year-to-date with 9,366 sales, behind only all-electric brand, Tesla. The all-new Niro EV is offered in three grades, with a (WLTP combined) range of 285 miles.

Kia’s eco vehicles – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric – in total achieved an 8.5 per cent market share in September, and 9.0 per cent year-to-date. With 35,237 eco vehicles sold year-to-date, Kia is fast progressing towards achieving one in every two cars sold being an electrified model.

Kia UK President and CEO, Paul Philpott, commented “This year has brought new challenges for us and our nationwide dealer partners. With huge demand for our products, especially for Sportage and Niro, plus our leading range of electrified cars, creating short supply and long lead-times and the on-going logistical challenges faced across the industry, these September results are simply outstanding. We have achieved strong growth throughout 2022, by focusing on fast stock turn, and as we head into Q4 I am confident that Kia can achieve 100,000 sales in the UK for the first time in its 31-year history.”

For the start of Q4, Kia launched a range of new finance offers for customers, including 5.9 per cent available on some of its most popular models, including variants of the all-new Sportage. The new quarter sees the arrival of the new XCeed and XCeed Plug-in Hybrid, as well as two exciting new grades of the Soul EV. Looking towards 2023 and beyond, Kia’s next electric car will be the range-topping EV9, following plans for the company to launch 14 fully-electric models globally by 2027.
