Volkswagen has released the first details of its powerful new Volkswagen Golf R, which is set to take to the stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. With a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 300 PS and 380 Nm (280 lbs ft), and transferring its power to the road via the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, the new Golf R is the fastest-accelerating production Golf yet, with a zero to 62 mph time of just 5.3 seconds (compared with 5.7 seconds for the previous model), or 4.9 seconds when fitted with the optional six-speed DSG gearbox. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
Meet the new Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet, the first-ever open-top R model and the fastest-ever production open-top Golf. At the heart of the new range-topping cabriolet is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine producing 265 PS, connected to a standard six-speed DSG gearbox transmitting power to the front wheels. The new car has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, with the benchmark 0-62 mph sprint taking just 6.4 seconds.
In place of his early six-cylinder engines in the R32 (so called because of 3.2-liter displacement), Volkswagen has not placed – as actually expected – the R36, but for ecological reasons the short and concise called Golf R with “discreet” 2 liters capacity, lower fuel consumption and more favorable carbon dioxide emissions. And nevertheless, the Golf R by Volkswagen with its 270 hp (or 199 kW) and 350 Nm of torque is the most powerful production Golf, at least so far.
Volkswagen are following the Golf R Cabrio Concept that graced the Wörthersee 2011 stage with a full production version and here is the model in action on video for the first time.
